Rooted in hustle, culture, and community, he’s redefining plant-based cuisine with bold flavors and even bolder vision. From the streets of Flint to the kitchens of Portland, Jewan’s journey is about more than food—it’s about breaking barriers, building legacy, and feeding the culture.

Roots: Where Hustle Meets Flavor

Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, Jewan Manuel’s grind started early. While most kids were just figuring out life, he was dual-enrolled in college while still in high school, securing his spot in a top-tier culinary program. That hunger took him from the Midwest to the kitchens of award-winning restaurants in Chicago and Grand Rapids, sharpening his skills and setting the stage for something bigger.

The Leap: Finding Purpose in the Kitchen

In 2017, Jewan made a move—Portland, Oregon. At first, he explored other business ventures, but the call of the kitchen was too loud to ignore. By 2018, he launched Plant Based Papi, starting with vegan cheese-making classes before flipping the script with a pop-up that had the city buzzing. His Plant Based Papi Tacos became the talk of the town, and by 2019, his underground tasting dinners were selling out night after night. The streets were watching, and Jewan delivered—opening his first brick-and-mortar in December 2020, with lines wrapped around the block.

Foward: Culture, Community, Ownership

Jewan isn’t just cooking—he’s pushing culture forward. With two vegan establishments under his belt, he’s proving that plant-based food can have soul, depth, and legacy. His focus? Ownership, representation, and mentorship. Whether he’s working with nonprofits, mentoring up-and-coming chefs, or serving as a private chef to A-list clientele, his mission stays the same: Break barriers, Uplift the community, and Inspire the next generation.

 

This isn’t just about food—it’s about creating space, telling stories, and leaving a mark. Because when Jewan Manuel steps in the kitchen, he’s not just cooking—he’s building something that lasts.
